Janani Janmabhoomi Swarg Se Mahan Hai Essays

IAST: jananī janmabhūmiśca svargādapi garīyasī) is a Sanskritshloka and the national motto of Nepal.[citation needed]

Translation[edit]

This Sanskrit verse can be translated as "Mother and motherland are superior to Heaven."

Origin[edit]

The verse is claimed to be from the great Hindu Epic Ramayana in Sanskrit composed by Adi Kavi (Primordial Poet) sage Valmiki. However, this shloka was never in original Ramayana.[1]

Different versions of the shloka are as follows.

Sage Bharadwaja said, "The friends, the riches and the grains are highly honoured in this world. Mother and mother-land are far superior to even the heaven."

[ This shloka is seen in the edition published by Hindi Prachara Press, Madras in 1930 by T.R. Krishna chary, Editor and T. R. Vemkoba chary the publisher. ][2]

Or

"Lakshmana, even this golden Lanka does not appeal to me, birth giving motherland is greater than heaven."

Source of this shloka is not known and is only a folklore.[3]
